What are we doing?
We are going to be first to drive a Hyundai Mighty Electric truck around Australia visiting every mainland capital city.
Why are we doing this?
We have a few objectives with this endeavor. Firstly we want to encourage the uptake of all forms of electric vehicles, be that passenger cars or long-haul transport. This will hopefully improve public perception of electric vehicles.
To showcase the state and countrywide EV charging infrastructure facilitating the full lap without using any liquid fuels, things long thought impossible.
And finally to engage the community along the way in an important climate change abatement topic.
How will you achieve this massive feat?
Kit out the very first Hyundai Mighty Electric sold in Australia with :
- The tray is carrying a portable 120 kwh battery that can both charge the truck and be charged itself, both through CCS Fast DC charging.
- Connectivity through a GPS tracking system, CB radio and Starlink internet connection.
- Utilising the Plugshare app – find the next charging location on the phone, turn the key on and drive to public chargers.
- For the stretches with no public chargers, the on-board battery will be used to self charge in order to continue to the next location.
- The fully loaded truck has a consumption of approx. 50 kWh per 100km, giving us a conservative range of 200km.
- Nominally for every 2.5hrs of driving we’ll need 1.5hrs of charging, with the balance of charging done at overnight stops. Aiming to cover 600km per day at 85kmh (7hrs driving, 3hrs charging)
What route will you be going?
We will be following the same route as Harald Murphy did in his Tesla Model Y in 2023, though we’ll be taking it a bit slower, aiming for a nominal program of 30 days.
The plan its to have 1 day in each capital city, plus a 1 day contingency on each leg. The night stops we will be making are (nominally):
- WA : Northampton, Minilya, Whim Creek, Willare RH, Halls Creek
- NT : Timber Creek, Darwin, Pine Creek, Elliot, Barkly Homestead
- Qld : Cloncurry, Charters Towers, Carmilla, Gin Gin, Brisbane
- NSW : Coffs Harbour, Newcastle, Sydney, Tarcutta
- Vic : Melbourne
- SA : Keith, Adelaide, Whyalla, Penong
- WA : Mundrabilla, Balladonia, Southern Cross, Perth
Who are the people brave (or crazy!) enough to take this challenge on?
The TOCEVA EV Racing Team is a bunch of volunteers from the electric driving community in WA. Jon Edwards is the Team Leader and Driver for this endeavor and will be accompanied by a series of co-drivers at various legs throughout the trip.
